The London Marathon is one of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors and takes runners through many of the British capital’s most iconic landmarks.
The race begins in Greenwich in southeast London and heads west through Woolwich and Charlton before looping around the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf. Runners follow long sections along the River Thames and cross the famous Tower Bridge around the halfway point, one of the most recognizable moments of the race.
The course then continues along the Embankment, passing major landmarks such as the Tower of London, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament. The race finishes on The Mall near Buckingham Palace, in the heart of central London.
The course is known for being relatively flat and fast, making it popular for both elite performances and personal best attempts.
